Puerto de Mogán the Venice of Gran Canaria
Puerto de Mogán, a charming port town designed by artist Ralph Neville, is located in the western part of southern Gran Canaria. Also known as the “Little Venice of Gran Canaria,” this idyllic village offers a perfect blend of tranquillity and beauty. (kaart)
Puerto de Mogán consists of a beautiful beach, a modern marina and a historic fishing port, and is part of the Mogán municipality. With a history of around 180 years, this resort is an ideal destination for tourists who want to enjoy both nature and culture.
This coastal town lies directly on the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by majestic mountains, making for a picturesque valley full of cosy shops and charming streets. Its crystal-clear waters and rich underwater world also make Puerto de Mogán a popular destination for deep-sea divers.
The Port of Mogan used to be the only way for the then residents to come into contact with the other residents of Gran Canaria.
The first inhabitants mostly came from Fuerteventura and Valencia in Spain to settle here for fishing. In the territory, an archaeological site “Casa de las sietes Esquinas” is located on a steep rock. Literally translated “The house with the Seven Corners“.
Climatologically, Puerto de Mogan is well located. It can even count on more hours of sunshine than, for example, Maspalomas or Playa del Ingles. It receives between 1.5 and 2 million tourists annually. Due to the many canals that wind their way between the houses, Puerto de Mogan is popularly called “The Venice of Gran Canaria“.
In recent years, Puerto de Mogan has undergone a true metamorphosis. The natural beach of the past has partly made way for an artificial beach brought in with sand from the Sahara. The beach is very suitable for a family holiday with children
The Picturesque Fishing Port
When you reach the harbor town, the first thing you notice is the old white harbor building. The port of Puerto de Mogan is very popular with sailors. (Information)
There is certainly no shortage of space for your boat or sailing yacht with more than 200 berths. There is a dry dock in the harbor where you have the opportunity to maintain the boat. But this harbor is not only for sailing, it is also a fishing port. Fishing is still an important source of income today.
Every day you can admire the sorting, cleaning and selling of the fish catch in the small fish market. If you are lucky you can sometimes find tuna of almost a meter in size among the catches.
You can of course taste the fresh fish in the fish restaurants at the marina. The restaurants are happy to let you taste their local specialties such as grilled tuna and delicious fish soup (caldos de pescado). The local fishermen are proud of their profession and certainly appreciate a visit to their craft.
The “Venice of Gran Canaria”
The white houses of this coastal town are its hallmark. They are richly decorated with colorful flowers such as Hibiscus, Bouganvilla, Tumbergia and the most famous flower of the Canary Islands, the Esterlizia. A walk through the picturesque streets will take you to souvenir shops, a candle shop, restaurants and bars with terraces.
Here you can really speak of the “small café on the harbour“. Among the newly built hotels and shops, you can visit the small church of the patron saint San Fernando and Virgen del Carmen. For the faithful, there is a mass celebration on Thursdays and Saturdays at 6pm. The beautiful church is located on the Paseo de los Pescadores.
Here and there you can see houses actually built over canals. The oldest part of Puerto de Mogan is on the steep rocky slope that starts at the car park on the Callejón Explanada del Castillete. Here you can still see authentic houses from the time Puerto de Mogan was founded.
I can recommend that you climb through the narrow streets between the houses to the platform at the top. In Callejón las Conchas you will discover a beautiful example of a house facade finished in mosaic. From the platform you have a breathtaking view of the harbor town. It is especially wonderful to stay here at sunset. Due to its charm, this city is a true paradise for romantic souls.
