Hotels in Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles

You cannot miss it in Maspalomas, Meloneras and Playa del Inglés, hotels and flats abound. Hotels in Gran Canaria or the other Canary Islands cannot be compared to a hotel in Belgium or the Netherlands.

The hotels in our country are smaller, usually do not have a large garden with an open-air swimming pool, and, with the exception of breakfast, offer few buffet options and fewer rooms. In short, it is not comparable to this in Spain and therefore also the Canary Islands.Admittedly the climate and therefore the weather in southern countries is a major asset they have in their hands.

Difference between 3- and 4-star hotels: What suits you?

I have stayed in both 3-star and 4-star hotels. In my opinion, there is a slight difference here and there, but in some hotel chains there is hardly any added value. So why did I switch to a 4-star hotel? To be honest, for the peace and quiet.

Advantages of 4-star Hotels

Hotels with 4 stars often receive fewer young people and families with children. This means less noise and more peace, ideal for those looking for a relaxing holiday. In a 3 star hotel the service can be just as good and the food perfect, but from experience I can say that in a 3 star hotel it is noisier.

Who are 3-star hotels suitable for?

3-star hotels are often more lively, with more pool activities and entertainment. This can be attractive for families and young people who enjoy an active holiday. Whether you choose a 3- or 4-star hotel depends on your personal preferences. If you are looking for peace and quiet, a 4-star or 5-star hotel is probably the better choice. If you want a lively atmosphere with many activities, then a 3-star hotel may be more suitable.

What types of hotels are there in Gran Canaria?

Apartment hotel or Aparthotel: An aparthotel has the same facilities as a hotel, the only difference is that you have an apartment and not a room. An example of this is Riu Flamingo in Playa del Ingles.

Hotel-restaurant: Here you can stay overnight and have a restaurant. The restaurant is usually included in the price. This can be all-inclusive or half-board. In a hotel-restaurant you don’t have to stay overnight either, you can also come and dine at the buffet subject to payment.

Resort Hotel: This hotel offers all the facilities of a regular hotel, but can also provide guests with recreational holidays, wellness, etc … These resort hotels are usually located near the coast.

Discounts and Hotel Specials

Traveling to Gran Canaria does not always have to be expensive. There are also budget hotels, but most hotels regularly offer hotel specials or discounts such as a May holiday or in June. These are the months in Gran Canaria where cheap holiday discounts are valid. Special child discounts are provided in most hotels.

Holiday in a Child-Friendly Hotel

Children and holidays, it is impossible to imagine today. Hotel operators also know this and like to respond to it with child discounts, children’s games, trips and other activities for children under the name of children’s entertainment. So a family holiday is high on the wish list of both parents of kids and hotel owners.

The hotels we have holidayed at until today have all been very child-friendly. Cooking workshops, children’s parties, ball games, a children’s disco and a clown are regularly provided. Another requirement is a children’s pool that is also safe enough for babies. The Hotel Riu Waikiki, for example, has a separate enclosed area where even an inflatable pool is provided for little ones. The children’s entertainment there is top-notch. LGBTQ+ Friendly Hotels in Gran Canaria

For gay and lesbian couples, Gran Canaria is the holiday island of choice. There are several beaches where nude recreation is allowed. Accommodation hotels and resorts for LGBTQ+ are on the rise. Close to the Yumbo shopping centre in Playa del Ingles – Maspalomas, where at night the gay community gathers in the numerous nightclubs, you can discover the 100% gay-friendly Hotel Neptune. It is modern and clean, but can sometimes be noisy due to its proximity to the night bars. You can read customer reviews here.

Another rated gay friendly hotel is Seaside Sandy Beach. This very good hotel is also within walking distance of the beach. Do bear in mind that on your way back to the hotel, the road is fairly steep. Seaside Sandy Beach very much welcomes gay and lesbian guests, but is also a family hotel. AxelBeach Maspalomas Hotel belongs to the hotel group AxelBeach, and has a beautiful apartment-based hotel and an excellent Lounge Club for its guests. AxelBeach Maspalomas is very gay and straight-friendly. Not suitable for children as the hotel is only open to adults. More information and customer comments can be read here.

Other gay-friendly hotels and flats include Club Torso, Apartments El Paseo, Birdcage Resort, Vista Bonita Gay Resort, Beach Boys Boutique Resort and Rainbow Golf Bungalows. Perhaps a tip if you are a gay person coming to Gran Canaria on holiday, and wish to book a hotel. During February and March, gay-friendly hotels can quickly get fully booked for Carnival. The same is valid for the month of May. That’s when the annual Gay Pride takes place in Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés.

All inclusive or Half Board

At“All Inclusive” or“Half Pension” you can then enjoy all the offers such as breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. What’s more, all drinks and snacks are included. You have paid for it, so you want to get the most out of it. My preference is therefore half-board. What is your preference ?

With half-board, you are not dependent on lunch in the afternoon. The advantage is then that you can leave the hotel immediately after breakfast to go on a day trip, for example, a terrace by the sea, a day at the beach, etc … You can then decide for yourself whether to have lunch in a restaurant or snack bar during the afternoon or not.

What both have in common is dinner in the evening. Here some difference is that some hotels divide dinner into 2 groups. The reason is because the restaurants cannot receive all guests at the same time. The majority of buffet hotels opt for a first group from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and a second group from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

My preference is for the first group. The shops are open until 10 p.m., which you can then take with you in combination with a terrace. On the other hand, if you don’t leave the restaurant until 10 p.m., all that remains is an evening walk and a terrace. Of course it is a free choice for everyone.

From Hotel to the Beach

Unless you stay at the pool or in the botanical garden of your hotel from morning to evening, there are probably hotel guests like you who prefer to spend a few hours sunbathing and swimming at the beach.

If your hotel is located directly or within walking distance of the beach, you don’t have to walk far. If you are not so lucky and it is just a bit too far, your hotel will probably offer a beach bus. This beach bus is a shuttle bus that takes you to the beach from morning to evening. This extra service is usually free.

Please note, the beach bus or shuttle visits several hotels. The departure times and pick-up times are generally every hour at a fixed location that is stated in advance. You can obtain all information about this at the reception.
