History of Mesa y López
The history of Mesa y López parallels the growth of Las Palmas in the 20th century. The original city centre gradually expanded towards Las Canteras and La Isleta, stimulated by the construction of the port of La Luz in 1883. This created new neighbourhoods such as Ciudad Jardín and Arenales.
In 1921 the Church of Santa María del Pino was built and in 1923 the brick factory of Eufemiano Fuentes Cabrera. The creation of the Naval Base in 1948 and the Real Club Náutico de Las Palmas in the 60s strengthened the area. The Insular Stadium opened its doors in 1944 and became an important center of urban activity.
The historic Central Market was built in 1958 and the Fataga Hotel in 1962. These developments contributed to the growth and prosperity of Mesa y López.
The Central Market is located in the commercial area of Mesa and López. It is the largest of the four markets in the city, with an area of 6,036,031 m², distributed over two floors and a shopping gallery.

The construction of José Mesa y López Avenue began in the mid-20th century. This wide avenue with green areas quickly became an important traffic junction. In the 1970s, El Corte Inglés, one of the largest retail chains in Europe, opened, turning the area into an important shopping center.
